I Got What I Asked For

By Craig Toach

Have you ever wanted something so bad, but everyone said you where being silly? They said there was no way you would get it. It was really important to but you felt silly wanting it? Well today I am going to tell you of a story about a little girl called Samantha and how Lord Jesus helped her.

Samantha was a little girl who was always asking lots of questions and finding out things. She loved to know about and to try out new things. She was always asking to be taken to try out these new things, like the time she asked and got to go to a farm and go horse riding. She had so much fun and got to learn how to ride a horse just like she had learnt about in all the books she had read.

She also loved sitting and listening to the grownups talk about some of the things they used to do when they where children. They always had so much fun and got into a lot of naughty things back then, like picking fruit from the nearby by farms, or knocking on peoples doors and running and hiding away so that when the person opened the door, they would find no one there but an empty doorway. This would some time make the people really mad and the people would shout out into the night at the children. They would look really funny and would make the children laugh till their tummy hurt.

One of the most interesting stories that Samantha loved to listen to was the one of how they would go fishing. She loved to hear how they would ride to a nearby fishing spot where they lived and would spend the day fishing and playing. They would make their own fishing rods, put worms on the hooks and see who could catch the most fish. At the end of the day they would bring all the fish they caught home and their mommy would then cook them and they would all have fish for supper.

Samantha just had to try this! This sounded like a lot of fun, she just had to try this out. Well she asked her granny and granddad to please take her fishing. She told them how she really wanted to learn how to catch a fish and she also wanted to try cooking and eating the fish she had caught.

So her grandparents decided to go fishing and they where thinking of taking her and her cousins with them. They had all the fishing rods, hooks and other stuff they would need to go fishing. It was now just a matter of planning for the right day for them to go.

Well the day came around and Samantha could hardly wait. After a long drive in the car, they all arrived at the fishing spot where they where going to fish for the day. It was a lovely place right by a dam and it had big cool trees to give them shade, nice green grass to lie on while they waited for the fish to bite and the sound of the water as it hit the bank. They quickly unpacked the car and got ready to fish.

Her granddad gave her a quick lesson on how she should fish and how to put a worm on the hook. Samantha listened and watched as he showed her and then she was ready to try it herself! Samantha took the worm and carefully put it on the hook. With everything ready to go, Samantha held the fishing rod in her hand and put it over her shoulder. She then took the rod still holding onto it and flung the hook and worm into the water that was attached to the rod with a long fishing line. With a long 'whiz' sound she watched as the hook flew through the air and landed in the water. She then slowly made the fishing line nice and tight and waited for the fish to bite.

She asked her granddad how long it would take before the first fish would bite on her hook, she was not every happy to hear that it was all up to the fish. He told her there was a chance that not even one fish would bite the whole day.

As Samantha sat there she was not felling so happy about fishing anymore. She so wanted to catch a fish and now there was a chance she might not be able to. While she was sitting there watching the water splash gentle against the bank in front of her and wondered if there was some way for her to get the fish to bite. She then asked her granddad if she could pray for the fish to bite. Well her cousins made fun of her and told her she was being silly. There was not way her praying was going to make the fish bite!

Well her Granddad had a different idea, you see her told her of a story from the Bible. It was a great story. It was about fishing! This is how the story goes…

One day Jesus was by the Lake of Gennesaret teaching the people. Now there where too many people all around trying to hear him that he could not speak to them properly, so what He did was climb into a fishing boat and go out on the water a little bit, so the waves would make his voice louder, so that all the people could hear Him.

Once he was finished He told the owner of the boat to go out on the lake because he wanted to bless him with fish. Now Simon (Peter) the owner of the boat was very tired because he had been fishing all night and had caught nothing. Not a single fish! He believed in Jesus though and decided to go out into the lake like Jesus had told him to do. Do you know what happened? Well, let me tell you! When Simon (Peter) did throw out the nets into the water there was so many fish in the net that they had to call another fishing boat to come and help collect all the fish because their boat was starting to sink from all the fish. Could you imagine a boat sinking from too many fish? There must have been a LOT of fish!

Well it was then that Samantha made up her mind to pray and ask Lord Jesus to help her. So right there she said a little prayer that went like this:

"Lord Jesus I thank you for always listening to my Prayers
Even if they are silly ones, they are important to me
Please help me to catch some fish today.
Thank you that you always answer my prayers

In Jesus Name,
Amen!"

Well I am sad to say that her cousins still thought she was being silly and made fun of her, but Samantha just knew that Lord Jesus would not let her down. As she closed her eyes and thanked Lord Jesus, she saw a funny picture. She saw Lord Jesus take a fish and put it on her hook. Would you believe, not soon after that, there was a little tug on the line! She gave a great big shout of delight, then her granddad and her pulled in a little fish. She could not believe her eyes! She had caught her very first fish!

Well with her line and hook in the water again she closed her eyes and prayed and thanked Lord Jesus for her little fish and how special He was for answering her prayers. When all of a sudden she saw the Lord Jesus put another fish on her hook. Well not long after that she felt an even harder tug on the line than she had felt the fist time. Again she shouted for joy and with her Granddads help they pulled in an even bigger fish than the one before.

Now Samantha was really happy and had put the hook into the water again and thanked Lord Jesus that he was always so special and always gave us good things – when… You guessed it! She saw Lord Jesus put ANOTHER fish on the line like the last time. She felt an even harder tug on the line than ever before. Again she shouted and again her Granddad helped her to pull it out. This fish was an even bigger fish than the other two. Samantha was so happy that she did not want to fish any more. She had caught all the fish she needed and was very happy in her heart.

Well that night I afraid to say that her cousins did not have their own fish to cook and eat. You see that day they did not get at single catch of any fish, but they did get to have fish because Samantha took the fish she had caught and shared it between all of then and they all had a great dinner together.

So if you are like Samantha and really want to have or do something, why not pray to Lord Jesus? Even if everyone says you are being silly. You see, if it is important to you, it is important to Lord Jesus and He will always answer your prayers! All you need to do is trust that he will do it, see him give it to you and then thank Him for giving it to you till and you get it - every time!

The End!
